You’re in the Wright Place!
While Wyoming’s dramatic mountain ranges and open plains might seem a far cry from the urban landscapes often associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, the state holds a unique connection to the master architect through the Quintin Blair House in Cody, Wyoming. Built in 1952-53, this private residence stands as Wyoming’s sole built example of Wright’s visionary design. Characterized by its harmonious integration with the rugged terrain, the Blair House exemplifies Wright’s “natural house” concept, utilizing local sandstone and wood to create a dwelling that feels organically connected to its environment. Its low-slung profile and expansive windows capture the surrounding views, offering a serene retreat that embodies Wright’s principles of bringing the outside in.
Beyond this significant Wright original, the spirit of his architectural philosophy can be subtly observed in some of Wyoming’s later 20th-century architecture. While not direct copies, certain buildings embrace the principles of clean lines, open floor plans, and a connection to the landscape that Wright championed. Keep an eye out for structures utilizing natural materials and those that seem to nestle into their surroundings rather than dominating them.
Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos. My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
