The architecture of Florida Southern College is a unique and beautiful example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian style. The campus is home to 13 Wright-designed structures, including the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, the Danforth Chapel, and the Usonian Faculty House.

Wright believed that Usonian homes should be “organic” in their design, meaning that they should be shaped by the natural contours of the land on which they are built. He also believed that they should be “democratic” in their layout, meaning that they should be open and flexible, with multiple spaces that can be used for different purposes.

The Annie Pfeiffer Chapel is one of the most iconic buildings on the Florida Southern College campus. It was designed by Wright in 1938, and it is a National Historic Landmark. The chapel is a simple, geometric structure with a low-pitched roof and a large skylight. The interior is flooded with natural light, and it is a beautiful and serene place for worship or meditation.

The Danforth Chapel is another important building on the Florida Southern College campus. It was designed by Wright in 1958, and it is also a National Historic Landmark. The chapel is a more complex structure than the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, with a soaring roof and a large stained glass window. The interior is also very beautiful, and it is a popular spot for weddings and other special events.

The Usonian Faculty House is a unique and innovative building on the Florida Southern College campus. It was designed by Wright in 1953, and it is the only Usonian Faculty House that was ever built. The house is a one-story structure with a low-pitched roof and a large open floor plan. It is made of concrete blocks, and it is designed to be energy-efficient and sustainable.

The architecture of Florida Southern College is a beautiful and unique example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian style. The campus is a popular tourist destination, and it is a place where students and visitors can experience the beauty and harmony of Wright’s work.

About Me

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
