Wilbur Pearce House

no image available

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950, the Wilbur Pearce House is a striking example of the architect’s Usonian Hemicycle style. Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, this private residence was built for Wilbur C. Pearce and his wife, offering a harmonious blend of organic materials and a unique curved floor plan designed to capture the expansive views of the valley below.

Preservation and Management

The Wilbur Pearce House has remained remarkably well-preserved over the decades, largely because it has stayed within the Pearce family for three generations. Recently, the home has undergone a careful restoration to maintain its architectural integrity while addressing the natural aging of its unique construction materials. It stands today as a private, well-maintained legacy of Wright’s mid-century work.

The house is characterized by its “hemicycle” or semi-circular design, similar to the Laurent House in Illinois. Constructed primarily of concrete blocks and rare Honduran mahogany, the home features a dramatic cantilevered eaves over the carport and a concrete slab floor equipped with a Usonian-style gravity heating system. The interior is a masterclass in texture, where the warmth of the mahogany contrasts with the neutral, rough-hewn concrete walls.

One of the most interesting features is the “solar hemicycle” concept; the curved glass wall on the south side was designed to track the sun, providing natural light and warmth throughout the day. At nearly 2,000 square feet, the layout includes three distinct “boxes” connected by arced walls—separating the workspace, living/dining area, and bedrooms while maintaining a fluid, organic connection to the San Gabriel Valley landscape.

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
