Built in 1956, the Gray House reflects Jones’ refined approach to residential architecture. The home is characterized by its meticulous craftsmanship and use of natural materials, primarily wood and stone. These elements create a warm, inviting atmosphere and contribute to the house’s seamless integration with the wooded landscape.

The design of the Gray House features the intricate detailing and complex structural forms that became hallmarks of Jones’ work. Its multi-level design steps with the slope of the site, further embedding it within the environment. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the use of natural ventilation, adds to the home’s sense of organic connection.

Restored

The Gray by Fay is significant within Jones’ body of work as it demonstrates his ability to translate the principles of organic architecture into a distinctive and personal residential design, distinct yet rooted in the tradition he inherited from Frank Lloyd Wright. More recently, the property has been restored in 2021 by architect David McKee of McKee Properties LLC and is now available for overnight stays, offering a unique opportunity to experience Jones’s architectural vision firsthand.

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
