Amberg House (1910)

amberg house

The Amberg House is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was built in 1911 for David M. Amberg, a prosperous liquor wholesaler. The house is considered a landmark of Prairie School architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house is a one-story, T-shaped structure with a flat roof and walls of brick, sandstone, and stucco. The exterior is decorated with colored ceramic tiles and has a wide overhang that protects the windows from the sun. The interior of the house is open and airy, with few walls and a large central living space. The house is also notable for its use of natural materials, such as wood and stone.

The Amberg House was designed by Marion Mahony Griffin, one of Wright’s most talented and prolific apprentices. Marion was responsible for the preliminary drawings for the house, as well as the final construction drawings. She also worked closely with Wright on the design of other Prairie School houses, including the Coonley House in Riverside, Illinois.

The Meyer May House is also located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is just a few blocks away. If you happen to stay at or drive by the Amberg House, be sure to take a tour at the Meyer May House!

The Amberg House is available for overnight stays through airbnb. Check rates and availability

About Me

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
