Wright in 1959

1959 was a year of transition across the globe. Political events shaped the world, with the Cuban Revolution marking a significant shift in Latin American politics and escalating Cold War tensions. Charles de Gaulle assumed the presidency of France, ushering in a new era for the nation.

Advancements

Technological advancements continued to reshape daily life. The microchip was invented, revolutionizing electronics and paving the way for future technological innovations. Barbie made her debut, becoming a cultural icon and influencing trends in children’s toys and fashion.

In science, 1959 saw advancements in space exploration as the Soviet Union launched Luna 2, the first spacecraft to reach the moon, marking a milestone in the space race.

Popular in the Theater

Culturally, 1959 was a time of evolving popular trends. Rock and roll continued to dominate the music scene, while fashion trends shifted towards more relaxed and casual styles. Ben Hur was very popular with movie-goers and won a record-breaking 11 Academy Awards including an Oscar for Charlton Heston for Best Actor in the film in 1960.

Literature and art reflected the changing times. Writers like Philip Roth published influential works, exploring social issues and contributing to the era’s literary landscape.

Sad News in Architecture

For Frank Lloyd Wright, 1959 was his final year. He passed away in April at the age of 91. Even in his advanced years, Wright remained a creative force. One of his most iconic and significant works, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, opened its doors just months after his death. This architectural masterpiece, with its spiral design and organic forms, became a symbol of modern architecture and a testament to Wright’s enduring legacy. It was a sad year for American architecture, marked by the loss of one of its greatest visionaries.

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
