Wright in 1937

Politically, in 1937, the world was increasingly overshadowed by the looming threat of war. In Europe, the Spanish Civil War intensified, serving as a proxy conflict between fascist and republican forces, foreshadowing the larger conflict to come. In Asia, Japan’s invasion of China further destabilized the global order, signaling a breakdown of international peace. Domestically, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “court-packing” plan in the United States sparked a major political controversy.

Technological Advancements

Despite the growing political turmoil, 1937 also saw significant inventions and technological advancements. Frank Whittle and Hans von Ohain made strides in jet engine technology, conducting early tests that would revolutionize air travel. The Golden Gate Bridge opened in San Francisco, a remarkable feat of engineering and a symbol of American ingenuity. The first electric guitar patent was awarded, paving the way for a new era in music.

Scientifically, 1937 was notable for advancements in chemistry and computer science. Otto Bayer and his team at IG Farben synthesized polyurethanes, a discovery that would lead to the development of versatile materials used in various industries. Alan Turing’s groundbreaking 1936 paper, “On Computable Numbers,” was published in 1937, laying the foundation for modern computer science.

Anxieties of the Era

Literature reflected the complexities and anxieties of the era. John Steinbeck published Of Mice and Men, a poignant story of the Great Depression that resonated with readers. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit was also published, introducing readers to the fantastical world of Middle-earth.

Art in 1937 was marked by the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris. Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, a powerful anti-war statement, was displayed at the Spanish Pavilion, capturing the devastation of the Spanish Civil War.

Architecture

In architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright continued to champion his organic style. Wright’s influence was significant, as he continued to design structures including establishing his winter home and desert laboratory of Taliesin West.

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
