Spring House

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Spring House is a unique architectural marvel nestled in Tallahassee, Florida. As the sole private residence designed by the master architect in the entire state, it stands as a testament to his innovative spirit. Its distinctive “pod-shaped” design, a departure from his more familiar Prairie Style, reflects Wright’s exploration of new forms and his ability to adapt to diverse climates.

Preservation and Management

The home is currently under the stewardship of the Spring House Institute, a non-profit organization founded by Clifton Lewis and dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and completion of this historic treasure. In 2014, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Spring House one of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.” The Institute continues to lead fundraising and restoration efforts to protect the structural integrity of the house against the humid Florida elements.

The house is a harmonious blend of organic architecture and the Florida landscape. Known officially as the Clifton and George Lewis II House, the 3,700-square-foot residence is one of only two “pod” hemicycles Wright ever designed.

Its circular layout and use of natural materials—including unpainted Ocala limestone blocks and tidewater red cypress—create a sense of intimacy and connection to the surrounding 10-acre hardwood forest. Inside, the second-story floor “floats,” suspended by steel rods from the roof beams, allowing for a completely open-plan first floor centered around a massive circular fireplace.

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
