Located in the heart of the California Central Coast, the Kundert Medical Clinic stands as a striking example of Dr. Karl Kundert’s persistence and the timeless vision of Frank Lloyd Wright. Originally designed in 1955 and completed in 1956 to house an ophthalmology practice, the building remains a functional piece of architectural history, seamlessly blending into the natural landscape of San Luis Obispo.

Architecture and History
The story of the clinic began with Dr. Kundert’s admiration for Wright’s Madison, Wisconsin designs. After a persistent pursuit that included nearly ten meetings between San Francisco and Scottsdale, Wright finally agreed to the project—reportedly won over by photographs of the sprawling sycamore trees lining the property’s creek. While the original plans called for Usonian concrete blocks to save on costs, local building codes forced a shift to the iconic red brick seen today.

A New Concept
Supervised by Wright’s associate Aaron Green while Wright was occupied with the Marin County Civic Center, the building features a distinct L-shaped floor plan. Inside, the design revolutionized the patient experience by moving away from the “small waiting room” concept. Instead, patients enter a large, naturally illuminated space where a central reception island acts like an “control tower,” directing traffic to various rooms. The interior is rich with carved wood panels and pierced screens that filter light into intricate patterns. Dr. Kundert claimed that Wright’s price for the design was $1,500; he did not consider it to be a lot of money and apparently “… thought it was a hell of a deal.”

Sixty years later, the structure remains “timeless.” Now occupied by a cardiology practice, the building still features much of its original decor and furnishings. Its flat roof and horizontal mortar lines emphasize its low profile, allowing it to sit in perfect harmony with the banks of the San Luis Obispo Creek.
