The George Ablin House is a masterclass in Frank Lloyd Wright’s ability to weave architecture into the rugged, arid landscape of the Southern San Joaquin Valley. Designed in 1958 and completed in 1961, this sprawling residence is one of Wright’s most significant late-career residential works, characterized by its “diamond” or hexagonal module and its breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada foothills.

The Ablin House was commissioned by George and Millicent Ablin, who sought a home that could accommodate their large family while embracing the dramatic topography of their Bakersfield lot. Like many of Wright’s final projects, the construction was completed posthumously under the supervision of Taliesin Associated Architects.
The home is notable for its use of a 120-degree hexagonal grid, which eliminates right angles and creates a sense of continuous, fluid movement. The exterior is composed of concrete block and a striking pink-toned stucco that mirrors the local soil, topped with a distinctive copper fascia. One of the most remarkable preservation stories of this house is its interior; the Ablin family lived in the home for decades, meticulously maintaining Wright’s custom-designed furniture, built-in cabinetry, and even the original color palette. The “Great Room” remains the heart of the home, featuring a massive fireplace and floor-to-ceiling glass that looks out over the valley.
