Wright in 1894

The year 1894 marked a period of significant shifts globally and domestically, subtly influencing the architectural landscape and Frank Lloyd Wright’s trajectory. While the United States was grappling with the economic fallout of the Panic of 1893, leading to social unrest like the Pullman Strike, cities like Chicago continued to be crucibles of innovation, particularly in building. The recent World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 had left a lasting impression, showcasing classical ideals but also sparking debates about the future of American architecture.

For Frank Lloyd Wright, 1894 was a year of intense experimentation and growing independence. Still working under Louis Sullivan’s influence but increasingly developing his own distinct voice, Wright was actively exploring the principles that would soon define the Prairie Style. This period saw him designing a variety of residential projects, pushing beyond the prevailing Victorian and revivalist trends.

Notably, 1894 is the year Wright designed the Robert W. Roloson Houses in Chicago. These four adjacent row houses, while still exhibiting some English Tudor Revival elements in their gabled facades, are crucial examples of Wright’s early attempts to apply his emerging ideas of horizontal emphasis, open interiors, and integrated design to an urban, multi-unit dwelling type. They demonstrate his continuous search for a truly American architecture, even in constrained urban settings.

Beyond the Roloson Houses, Wright was refining the geometric order and organic integration that would become his hallmark. The intellectual ferment of the era, the rapid industrialization, and the search for a unique American identity all provided a backdrop against which Wright’s revolutionary concepts were taking shape, laying the groundwork for the architectural masterpieces that would follow in the coming years.

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
