Wright in 1892

The year 1892 was a definitive turning point in American history and a year of professional “double-dealing” that would ultimately launch the independent career of Frank Lloyd Wright. Globally, the era was defined by the Gilded Age’s peak and the restless anticipation of the upcoming 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. As the “White City” rose on the lakefront, showcasing neoclassical grandeur, Wright was quietly working behind the scenes to develop a much more radical, indigenous American language.

Domestically, 1892 was marked by both industrial might and social friction, from the Homestead Strike to the election of Grover Cleveland. In the world of architecture, the firm of Adler & Sullivan was at the height of its powers, with Wright serving as the “pencil in Sullivan’s hand.” However, the financial demands of a growing family and Wright’s own burgeoning ego led him to take on a series of clandestine residential commissions—his now-famous “Bootleg Houses.”

For Frank Lloyd Wright, 1892 was a year of incredible creative output and professional risk. While he was executing Sullivan’s vision for the revolutionary Charnley-Persky House on the Gold Coast, he was simultaneously designing a flurry of private homes in Oak Park and Kenwood. These 1892 designs, such as the Warren McArthur House and the George Blossom House, show Wright masterfully playing with existing styles like Dutch Colonial and Colonial Revival while stripping away Victorian excess to reveal the geometric “bones” of his future Prairie Style.

This year of intense experimentation across various neighborhoods in Chicago and Oak Park represents the “big bang” of Wright’s residential practice. The homes designed in 1892 are more than just early works; they are the physical evidence of a genius outgrowing his apprenticeship and preparing to break the mold of American architecture forever.

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
