Walton House

no image available

The Robert Walton House is a striking example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian vision adapted for the specific climate of California’s Central Valley. This 1957 design showcases Wright’s mastery of concrete block and glass, creating a residence that is both a private sanctuary and an open invitation to the surrounding landscape.

The Walton House is one of the later Usonian designs, commissioned by Robert and Mary Walton in the mid-1950s. The home is built using a distinctive “stacked” concrete block method, a signature of Wright’s late-period California work. These blocks, combined with vast expanses of mahogany-trimmed glass, allow the home to stay cool during Modesto’s intense summer heat while maintaining a light, airy feel.

The house is situated on a large lot bordering the Dry Creek area. Its plan is essentially a long, low L-shape that hugs the earth, featuring a dramatic cantilevered roof that provides necessary shade. The interior is noted for its open communal spaces and a large central fireplace, which acts as the “hearth” or anchor for the entire structure. The current and past owners have been diligent stewards, maintaining the original built-in furniture and the rhythmic, geometric patterns that repeat throughout the window perforations and block work.

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
