Wright Sites in Mississippi

Though not as central to their careers as other states, Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan shared a brief but fascinating connection to Mississippi. In the early 1890s, Louis Sullivan, renowned for his “Form follows function” philosophy, hired a young Frank Lloyd Wright as a draftsman for the architectural firm of Adler & Sullivan. During this period, Wright designed two bungalows in Ocean Springs, Mississippi: the Louis Sullivan Bungalow and the James A. Charnley Bungalow. Though the Sullivan bungalow was demolished by Hurricane Katrina, the Charnley Bungalow remains a testament to this early collaboration.

A Lasting Influence

Although it’s impossible to definitively attribute design elements to each architect on these projects, they showcase the budding talents of Wright and the influence of Sullivan’s principles. The bungalows reveal glimpses of what would become Wright’s signature Prairie Style, with horizontal lines and open floor plans, while still echoing Sullivan’s emphasis on functionality and integration with the surrounding environment. This Mississippi chapter, though brief, offers a unique lens into the evolution of these architectural giants and their lasting impact.

About Me

Yvonne Carpenter-Ross

FLW Enthusiast & Webmaster

Architecture and home design have always fascinated me. As a young girl I enjoyed drawing floor plans, rearranging my parent’s furniture and playing with Lincoln Logs and Legos.  My passion has always been the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since I have been old enough to drive a car, I have visited Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the Chicagoland area and attended the Wright Plus house walks. Now, as co-owners of Northern Sky Designs, my husband & I are able to combine our website design skills and FLW travels to bring you this website! Enjoy!
