Preservation and Management
The Fawcett House (also known as Fawcett Farm) underwent a multi-award-winning restoration led by architect Arthur Dyson, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright, in consultation with the architect’s grandson, Eric Lloyd Wright. This meticulous effort earned a 2019 Preservation Design Award from the California Preservation Foundation. The restoration not only stabilized the structure and updated building systems but also completed several original Wright designs that were never executed during initial construction, such as a large fireplace cauldron and a forecourt for the entry.
Choice of a Lifetime
The home was originally commissioned in 1955 by Randall “Buck” Fawcett, a Stanford football star who chose to work his family’s farm over a professional career with the Chicago Bears. Its construction was completed posthumously in 1961. The 4,000-square-foot residence is unique for its triangular geometry, featuring an “H” or “K” plan with wings at 60- and 120-degree angles. This abstract “grammar” is visible everywhere, from the scored concrete floors to the recessed light fixtures and the undulating copper fascia.
Wright Connections
Architecture runs deep in the family; the Fawcetts’ daughter, Lynn, married architectural writer Henry Whiting II. Continuing the family’s stewardship of Wright’s legacy, the couple lives at Teater’s Knoll in Bliss, Idaho—the only structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the state of Idaho. Henry Whiting has spent decades restoring the Idaho studio, much as the family preserved the Los Banos farm.
Situated in the agricultural heart of Los Banos, the house was designed to withstand the valley’s heat and wind while integrating seamlessly with the landscape. The property is a true oasis, featuring a Koi pond, a Japanese garden, and a swimming pool that reflects the home’s dramatic cantilevered rooflines. Legend has it that Ronald Reagan even delivered a stump speech on the grounds during his gubernatorial campaign.
