The King Kamehameha Golf Club is a stands as a rare architectural bridge between Frank Lloyd Wright’s mid-century genius and the modern Hawaiian landscape. Originally designed for high-profile clients in the 1950s, this sprawling structure finally found its home in 1993, offering visitors a unique chance to step inside a “lost” Wright masterpiece.

From Hollywood to Hawaii

The King Kamehameha Golf Club is a fascinating “unbuilt” design brought to life. Originally conceived in 1949 as a luxury residence for Raul Bailleres in Mexico, the plans were later adapted in 1957 for the famous couple Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe. When the couple divorced, the plans for the project were abandoned and shelved until 1988, when the golf club’s developers received permission from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to adapt the design for this Maui site.

Completed in 1993—long after Wright’s passing—the structure is one of the largest and most ambitious adaptations of his residential sketches into a commercial space. While the scale was increased to 74,000 square feet, the integrity of “Organic Architecture” remains, ensuring the building harmonizes with the dramatic Hawaiian landscape.

The building is easily recognizable by its striking pink hue, which was chosen to complement the surrounding tropical flora. The interior is a masterclass in Wrightian detail, featuring stained glass, skylights, and furniture designs that were either specified by Wright or inspired by his original sketches. One of the most impressive features is the expansive view of the “isthmus” of Maui, offering a panoramic look at both the northern and southern coastlines of the island.
