The K.C. DeRhodes House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1906, stands as a quintessential example of his Prairie School architecture in South Bend, Indiana. Commissioned by Kersey C. and Laura Bowsher DeRhodes, who were newly married at the time, this private residence showcases many of Wright’s signature elements from his “first golden decade” of residential design. Also of note here is the fact the officiated minister at the couples wedding was the Rev. Jenkin Lloyd Jones, Frank Lloyd Wright’s uncle.

Strong Horizontal Lines

Characterized by its strong horizontal lines, the house features a stucco exterior with wood trim, continuous window sills, and low-pitched roofs with broad overhanging eaves, all designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The interior exhibits Wright’s open floor plan philosophy, with a cruciform layout subdivided by piers and low bookcases, creating distinct yet flowing living, dining, and reception areas. Celebrated as the first completely realized drawing in Marion Mahony’s innovative style, the DeRhodes House rendering broke convention. She integrated architecture and nature seamlessly, borrowing from Japanese prints to establish a powerful marketing brand.
