Wright's Early Career
Historic Oak Park, Illinois boasts 23 structures either designed or remodeled by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Of those 23, one is his original home and studio. Another is a home Wright originally designed for engineer and inventor Charles Roberts in 1895, but not built until 1898. Later occupied by George W. Smith, a salesman for Marshall Field & Company, the house is barely reminiscent of the Prairie Style homes that Wright was later to build, and bears a few styling features that were used years later when he designed the Unity Temple (also in Oak Park).
Other than the steep roof lines and narrow chimneys, one striking feature of the home is the upturned ends of the roof (almost evoking a Dutch-like look & feel). The home is certainly though, an excellent example of Wright’s earliest architectural period.
